Job search guide

How to follow up after a job application without sounding desperate.

A short, respectful follow-up keeps your name visible, confirms interest, and gives recruiters an easy way to respond.

Simple timing

For most applications, wait about 5 to 7 days before the first follow-up. If you already interviewed, send a thank-you note within 24 hours, then follow up again if there is no update after the timeline they gave you.

Good follow-up structure

  1. Use a clear subject line.
  2. Mention the exact role.
  3. Keep it short.
  4. Restate interest.
  5. Ask for next steps or an update.

Example

Hi,

I hope you're doing well. I wanted to check in on my application for the role. I remain interested in the opportunity and would appreciate any update when available.

Thank you,
